AWS Storage Gateway — Hybrid Cloud Storage

Storage Gateway cung cấp on-premises access tới virtually unlimited cloud storage qua 3 interface: File, Volume, Tape.

3 loại gateway

  • File Gateway: NFS/SMB interface → objects lưu S3. Local cache cho low-latency access. Tích hợp AD cho SMB.
  • Volume Gateway — Cached Volumes: primary data ở S3, cache local cho frequently accessed data. iSCSI interface.
  • Volume Gateway — Stored Volumes: primary data local, async backup lên S3 dưới dạng EBS snapshots.
  • Tape Gateway (VTL): virtual tape library → S3, archive sang Glacier Flexible/Deep Archive. Thay thế physical tape backup.

Triển khai

  • Chạy dưới dạng VM (VMware, Hyper-V, KVM) hoặc hardware appliance từ AWS.
  • Kết nối qua Internet hoặc Direct Connect.
  • Có thể kết hợp với DataSync: DataSync migrate bulk data, File Gateway duy trì ongoing access.

Exam tips

  • On-prem app cần NFS/SMB access tới S3 → File Gateway.
  • On-prem backup cần iSCSI + EBS snapshot → Volume Gateway.
  • Thay thế tape backup → Tape Gateway.
  • Chuyển data từ Storage Gateway sang Glacier: Tape Gateway archive trực tiếp, File Gateway dùng S3 Lifecycle rule.

Storage Gateway ≠ DataSync. Gateway = ongoing hybrid access. DataSync = transfer/sync nhanh. Thường dùng cả hai.
